Iqbal Masih Lahore 1992

Iqbal Masih Lahore 1992

Pakistan Cards- journey in a feudal country.

This exhibition was made after Iqbal Masih had been shoot down the eastern 1995 by a paid gunman.

I learned to know Iqbal Masih 1992 during a 6 weeks trip to Pakistan where I and my colleague, journalist Maria Domellöf, were gathering material to a story about bonded work and child labour. We travelled around in Pakistan with the organisation Bonded Labour Liberation Front, BLLF, and met people in all the social stratas, feudal lords, judges, imams, carpet workers, brick kiln workers etc.

Iqbal had been working in a carpet factory since he was very small but one day he got in touch with BLLF and he met the founder Ehsan Ullah Khan who told him that it is illegal with child labour. He also told him how to face the carpet boss, to look him in the eyes and to tell him that he will quit the job as it is illegal.

After this Iqbal went together with BLLF to meetings where he was speaking to other children working in factories. I heard him during one meeting and realized that this 10 years old little boy have a special charisma. He became a threat to the carpet factories after he was internationally recognized. Iqbal was 12 years old when he was killed. This exhibition was made in tribute for Iqbal and to Ehsan Ullah Khan and other people involved in the BLLF work who was forced to leave Pakistan after the killing of Iqbal.
