NORRLAND-berättelser från inlandet - project in progress
The northern part of Sweden is by some called “the forgotten country”. It was once a great wilderness with untouched forests, noisy rivers and mighty glaciers. The name is referring to the fact that this biologically rich part of Sweden always have been neglected for the purpose to make it to an unproblematic source of natural resources. Even Carl von Linné travelled quickly through the forests of Lappland to reach the awaiting mountains in Kvikkjokk and therefore never discovered the multitude of speices living here. Much later the national virgin forest investigation, performed in Sweden 1978- 1982, did the same misstake and forgot to investigate the species living in the northern boreal forests.
Most of these forests are cut down today and the first clear- cutting took place in the 1930th.
At the same time as the forestindustry started to grow in the north both the mineindustry and the waterpower industry started different projects in a large scale in this part of Sweden.
The result of this exploitation of the natural resources have resulted in a changed lanscape with new profiles and changed ecology. The focus of this project is to document the present status of the landscape in the swedish Lappland.
